What It Costs to Adopt a Tree in India, and Where Every Rupee Goes
It costs ₹586 to adopt a tree in India through Catch Your Tree. That one payment covers land preparation, a native sapling, planting, three years of maintenance, a digital certificate and a geo-tagged location for your plant.
The number is easy to state. What people usually want to know is what it pays for, why prices on other platforms run anywhere from ₹85 to ₹1,850, and how to tell a fair price from a cheap one that leaves things out. This guide takes the ₹586 apart rupee by rupee, then shows you how to compare the cost to adopt a tree in India between platforms.
What the Cost to Adopt a Tree Covers
When you look at the cost to adopt a tree, the sapling turns out to be the smallest part of it. The ₹586 includes:
• Land preparation: excavating the soil bed up to 3 feet, then adding manure and nutrients
• Marking and mapping: every pit is marked so each plant can be found and tracked
• A native sapling suited to the local climate
• Planting by our field team
• Three years of care: watering, mulching, monitoring and replacement if the sapling does not survive
• A digital certificate with the details of your adoption
• A geo-tagged location and photo updates as it grows
• Tracking through FITS, our Forest Impact Tracking System
Most of that work happens before the sapling goes in and long after planting day is over. That is where the money goes, and the next section shows exactly how it is split.
Where Each Rupee Goes
Our adoption page publishes the split, so you can check it yourself. The rupee amounts below are calculated from those percentages and rounded.
• Maintenance (3 years): 55%, about ₹322
• Land preparation: 37%, about ₹217
• Plantation and support: 4%, about ₹23
• Sapling: 3%, about ₹18
• Technology: 1%, about ₹6
Maintenance is the largest line, at 55%. A young plant in an Indian city has to get through three summers, and the early dry seasons decide whether it survives. Watering, mulching, checking each plant and replacing the ones that fail is paid work done over three years. That is why it takes more than half of the budget.
Land preparation comes second, at 37%. Urban soil is often compacted and low in organic matter, so the ground needs real work before anything goes in. We excavate, add manure and mark each pit. Skipping this step is a common reason plantation drives lose saplings in their first year.
The sapling itself is only 3%, about ₹18. That surprises most people. A young native sapling is cheap. What costs money is giving it a place to survive and someone to look after it.
Plantation and support is 4%. This is the labour of planting and the field support around it. Technology is 1%. That covers the geo-tagging and tracking system that lets you see where your plant is and how it is doing.
How the Three Years of Care Work
The care period is where most of the cost to adopt a tree goes, so it helps to know what it involves. Our team waters the sapling, mulches around its base to hold moisture and keep weeds down, and checks on it regularly. If one does not survive, we replace it. The aim is a plant that can stand on its own, and after three years it is expected to be self-sufficient and keep growing for decades.
This is the part of the process that many one-day plantation events leave out. Planting is quick and photographs well. Care is slow, repetitive and unglamorous, and it is what separates a plant that lives from one that quietly dies in the first dry spell. CATCH Foundation reports survival above 90% across its forests.
What Happens After You Pay
Once you adopt a tree, you receive a digital certificate with the details of your adoption. You also get the exact geo-tagged location, so you can find your plant on a map. As the months pass, photo updates show how it is growing, and our FITS system tracks its environmental contribution.
Behind the scenes, the site moves through four stages: excavation, manuring, marking and plantation. The project section on our homepage shows which stage we are at, so you can see how far along the work is.
What ₹586 Works Out To Over Three Years
Spread across the three years of care, the cost to adopt a tree here comes to about ₹16 a month, or roughly 54 paise a day, for a plant that is looked after, placed on a map and replaced if it fails. The payment covers the whole three years, so you are not paying for a sapling and hoping someone follows up.
If you adopt more than one, the cost scales simply. Five trees come to ₹2,930 and ten trees to ₹5,860.
Why the Cost to Adopt a Tree Varies Across India
Public listings on other Indian tree-planting platforms currently run from ₹85 to ₹1,850 per plant, depending on the project. One well-known platform lists projects between ₹85 and ₹270, and another lists a range from ₹149 up to ₹1,850. That is a wide spread, and it comes down to a few things:
• Species and purpose. Some programmes plant fruit trees on farms and community land, where farmers and rural communities benefit from the fruit. Others plant native forest species on land set aside for a forest. The two have different costs and different goals.
• Who does the daily care. Models differ on this. In ours, our team does it for three years.
• How long the care lasts. A price that covers planting only, or one year of care, will always be lower than one that covers three years.
• Where the planting happens. Preparing a plot in or near a city usually costs more than a rural site. Delhi NCR projects, for example, are listed at higher prices than some rural ones.
• What you get back. A certificate, a location on a map, photo updates and tracking all take work to run.
A low price is not a flaw in itself. It often reflects a different model with a different purpose. The useful question is what the price includes, not how small the number is.
How to Compare Prices Fairly
Sticker prices can mislead, because each cost to adopt a tree covers a different length of care. A simple fix is to divide the price by the years of care it includes.
Suppose a listing costs ₹150 and covers one year of care. That works out to ₹150 for each year of care. Our ₹586 covers three years, which is about ₹195 for each year. The gap is much smaller than the sticker prices suggest, and the second figure also includes individual geo-tagging and replacement. The example is hypothetical, but the method works with any real listing: find out how many years of care you are paying for, then compare.
How ₹586 Compares
At ₹586, our cost to adopt a tree sits above most listed prices and well below the top of the range. We are not the cheapest option, and we won't claim to be.
What the price buys is a specific model. Your sapling is planted on prepared land inside a dense native forest, built on the Miyawaki method. It is individually geo-tagged. Our team cares for it for three years and replaces it if it fails.
If your priority is the lowest cost per plant, or supporting a farmer's fruit orchard, a lower-priced listing may suit you better. If you want one plant you can locate on a map and follow for three years, that is what Catch Your Tree is built for.
Adopting vs Donating to a Plantation Drive
A general donation to a plantation drive usually funds a batch of saplings, and the total gets reported as a headcount. Tree adoption is different in one practical way: your payment is tied to a single plant that has a location, a record and a three-year care plan. You can check on it. A donation to a drive is harder to follow once the money is pooled. Both can do good, and which one you choose depends on how much traceability you want. If you want to understand how drives work from the inside, our guide to the tree plantation drive walks through the steps.
Questions to Ask Before You Pay for Any Tree Adoption
These work for any organisation, ours included:
• How long is the care period, and who does the work?
• Is each plant individually located, or only the project as a whole?
• What happens if it dies?
• Are the species native to the planting site?
• What does the price include besides the sapling?
• Can you verify the planting yourself, through coordinates or a site visit?
• Is the organisation a registered NGO with a track record longer than one campaign?
A programme that answers these clearly is easier to trust. One that avoids them deserves a second look.
The Tax Benefit
CATCH Foundation is registered under the Public Trust Act, 1950, with 12A and 80G status, and our adoption page describes contributions as eligible for a deduction under Section 80G. Whether you can claim it depends on your tax regime and the rules in force when you file, so check with a tax adviser. This is general information and not tax advice. Keep your certificate and payment receipt for your records.
Cost for Gifts, Several Trees and Companies
You can adopt a tree in India as a gift for the same ₹586. The certificate is issued for the person you name, and they receive the location and updates. It works for birthdays, anniversaries, weddings and memorials.
Companies, schools and housing societies can adopt in bulk for CSR, sustainability goals and employee engagement. For those packages, talk to our team so we can set it up properly.
Where Your Adoption Is Planted
Right now, if you adopt a tree in India through Catch Your Tree, it is planted at Ashok Chakra Van in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, working toward 30,000 trees. You can read more on our Ahmedabad project page. The work sits within CATCH Foundation, which began in 2014 as a cleanliness drive in one Ahmedabad housing society and has since planted over 12.8 lakh trees across 30 cities.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost to adopt a tree in India?
At Catch Your Tree it costs ₹586. That covers land preparation, a native sapling, planting, three years of maintenance, a digital certificate and a geo-tagged location. Other platforms list prices from ₹85 to ₹1,850, depending on the project.
What does the cost to adopt a tree include?
At Catch Your Tree it includes soil preparation, the sapling, planting, three years of watering, mulching, monitoring and replacement if needed, a certificate, a geo-tagged location, photo updates and impact tracking.
Why is maintenance more than half of the cost?
A newly planted sapling has to survive several dry seasons before it can look after itself. Paying for three years of watering, mulching, checks and replacement is what raises its chances, so it takes 55% of the budget.
Can I adopt a tree for less than ₹586?
Some platforms list lower prices, often for different models such as farmland fruit trees or shorter care periods. Compare what each price includes, and divide by the years of care, before choosing.
Is the cost of adopting a tree tax-deductible?
CATCH Foundation has 12A and 80G registration, and contributions are described as eligible under Section 80G. Whether you can claim a deduction depends on your tax regime, so check with a tax adviser.
What happens if my plant dies?
We replace it. Replacement if needed is part of the three years of care.
How much does it cost to adopt several trees or gift one?
Each one costs ₹586, so five trees come to ₹2,930. A gifted plant costs the same. For company or bulk adoptions, contact our team.
