Plant a Tree on Your Birthday and Watch It Grow Every Year
You can plant a tree on your birthday in two ways. You can plant a sapling yourself, or you can adopt one online and receive its location and a certificate. If you live in a flat, the second option is usually the practical one, and it is what this guide mostly covers.
Birthdays come with cake, gifts and plenty of things that are gone by the next morning. Planting is one of the few ways to mark the day that is still growing years later. Below you will find what it involves, which species suit India, what it costs and how to do it properly, so your birthday sapling is still alive next year.
Why More People Plant a Tree on Their Birthday
The idea is spreading, and governments have started backing it. In July 2026, Assam launched Janmadin Seuj Shapat Udyan, or Birthday Green Pledge Gardens, with the aim of setting one up in each of its 126 constituencies, so that people can plant a sapling on their birthday and pledge to look after nature. The state's environment and forest minister said that planting on a birthday carries memories and a sense of responsibility that grows stronger with time. Uttar Pradesh's forest department announced a similar idea in 2017, with Smriti Vatika gardens where people can plant saplings on birthdays and anniversaries.
The reasons people give are simple. A birthday sapling gives the day a lasting marker. It suits people who want to own fewer things. And it turns a personal milestone into something that helps a neighbourhood: shade, cleaner air and homes for birds and insects.
Three Ways to Plant a Tree on Your Birthday
Plant it yourself. If you have a garden, a farm plot or permission to plant in your housing society, this is the most hands-on route. You choose the species, dig the pit and water it. The catch is aftercare. A sapling needs regular watering through its first dry seasons, and many birthday saplings die because nobody planned for that.
Join a plantation drive. Forest departments and NGOs run drives on set dates, and some now have dedicated birthday gardens. This helps if you have no land. You plant on the day, but a drive often cannot follow up on your individual sapling afterwards. Our guide to how a tree plantation drive works explains what to look for.
Adopt a tree online. You pay once, and the organisation plants, cares for and tracks it for you. At Catch Your Tree, an adoption costs ₹586 and includes three years of care, a digital certificate and a geo-tagged location. It suits people in flats, people who live in another city and anyone who wants the sapling looked after properly.
Which route is best depends on whether you have land and time. Many people do both: plant a small sapling at home and adopt one more so that at least one is cared for.
Which Tree Should You Plant on Your Birthday?
Pick a native species that suits your local climate and the space you have. Native trees need less water once established and support local birds and insects better than imported or ornamental ones.
-
Neem: hardy, fast-growing and well suited to hot, dry regions
-
Gulmohar: thrives in heat and gives a wide shade canopy
-
Mango: a good choice if you have the space and want fruit
-
Pomegranate: compact enough for smaller plots
-
Banyan and peepal: long-living and valuable for wildlife, but they grow very large and need open land
If you are adopting, you do not have to choose. The field team plants species suited to the site. Our Ahmedabad project, for example, uses native species such as neem, gulmohar, banyan and peepal.
Timing matters if you plant yourself. Saplings generally settle in best with the monsoon rains, so a birthday in peak summer is a hard time to plant. When you adopt, planting follows the project's own schedule, so your birthday does not need to fall in the right season.
Planting a Sapling Yourself: A Simple Checklist
If you plan to plant a tree on your birthday yourself, a few steps decide whether the sapling lives:
-
Choose a native species and a sapling sized for the space you have.
-
Dig a pit that suits the sapling, and mix compost into the soil.
-
Set the sapling in gently, without disturbing its roots, then fill and firm the soil to remove air pockets.
-
Water deeply straight away, and mulch around the base to hold moisture.
-
Label it with the date, so the birthday stays attached to it.
-
Agree a watering routine for the dry season before you plant.
Most of these steps are the ones we follow on a larger scale at our own sites. The difference is that we also excavate and enrich the soil, mark and map every pit, and keep checking for three years.
If You Live in a Flat or a Rented Home
Not having a garden should not stop you. You can still plant a tree on your birthday in three practical ways. Ask your housing society whether you can plant in the common area, and offer to arrange the watering. Adopt a tree online, where your sapling grows on prepared land and is looked after for you. Or plant on a family member's farm or plot, with a clear agreement about who waters it.
Adoption also solves the moving problem. A sapling in a pot on a rented balcony is tied to your address. An adopted one stays where it was planted, and you can follow it from anywhere.
How to Adopt a Tree for Your Birthday, Step by Step
-
Pick the date and decide who it is for: yourself, a child or someone else.
-
Adopt on our adoption page. It takes a few minutes.
-
Receive your digital certificate with the details of your adoption.
-
Get the geo-tagged location so you can find your plant on a map.
-
Follow the photo updates as it grows over three years of care.
-
Ask us if you would like to visit the planting site in person.
Here is what it costs. One tree is ₹586, five trees are ₹2,930, ten trees are ₹5,860 and thirty trees are ₹17,580. Some people adopt one for every decade of their age, others one for every year. The number is up to you.
Ideas to Make the Tree Part of Your Birthday
-
Frame the certificate. Print it and put it on the table at your party, so guests see what the day is about.
-
Say it on the invitation. Ask guests to adopt one in your name in place of gifts, or tell them you have adopted one yourself.
-
Make it a yearly tradition. Plant a tree on your birthday every year and keep the certificates together. After a few years you have a small forest with a story.
-
Involve children. Let a child plant a sapling on each birthday and measure it against their own height as they both grow.
-
Give saplings as return gifts. A small potted sapling is a simple replacement for a plastic goodie bag, as long as each family knows how to look after it.
-
Plant it for your mother. Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam asks people to plant a sapling in their mother's name, and a birthday is a natural moment to do it.
Milestone, Children's and Memorial Birthdays
Milestone birthdays such as a first, eighteenth, thirtieth or fiftieth are natural moments to plant a tree on your birthday and mark the years. Some people adopt one for each decade they have lived, which makes the number itself part of the story.
A child's birthday works well too. A sapling that goes in on the first birthday can be revisited every year, with a photo beside it. Over time the child and the plant grow up together, and the certificate becomes a keepsake.
Birthdays can also be a way to remember someone. If a person you love has passed away, adopting a tree in their name on their birthday gives the day somewhere to go. It keeps growing, and you can follow its updates each year.
What a Birthday Tree Gives Back
A sapling takes years to become a tree, so the early benefits are small. Over time, a native tree gives shade that cools the ground beneath it, a place for birds and insects to live and roots that hold the soil. Those benefits build slowly, which is another reason the three years of care matter. Dense native planting, the approach we use, is built on the Miyawaki method and is meant to speed that growth.
Plant a Tree Gift: Doing It for Someone Else's Birthday
A plant a tree gift suits friends and family who already have everything. You adopt one in their name, and the certificate is issued for them. They receive the location and updates, so the gift keeps arriving for three years. For a plant a tree present with something to unwrap, pair the printed certificate with a framed card or a potted plant. If you want to gift a tree to someone far away, nothing has to be shipped.
What Happens After Your Birthday
Planting day is the easy part. For the next three years our team waters the sapling, mulches around it, monitors it and replaces it if it fails. After three years, it is expected to be self-sufficient and keep growing for decades. CATCH Foundation reports survival above 90% across its forests. That figure matters most for a birthday tree, because a sapling that dies in its first summer leaves nothing to celebrate.
If you plant a tree on your birthday yourself, make a care plan before the day: who waters it, how often in the dry season and who checks it when you travel.
A Few Things to Check Before You Choose
Before you plant a tree on your birthday, whichever route you take, ask where the sapling will be planted, who looks after it, for how long and what happens if it dies. Ask whether you can see its exact location. These questions separate a birthday tree that grows from one that only photographs well.
Who Is Behind Catch Your Tree
Catch Your Tree is run by CATCH Foundation, which began in 2014 as a cleanliness drive in one Ahmedabad housing society and has since planted over 12.8 lakh trees across 30 cities. Read the full story on our About Us page. Right now, adoptions are planted at Ashok Chakra Van in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, which you can read about on our Ahmedabad project page.
CATCH Foundation is a registered NGO under the Public Trust Act, 1950, with 12A and 80G status. Whether a contribution qualifies for a tax deduction depends on your tax regime, so check with a tax adviser.
